ばれぬが勝ちなのか？正直者が馬鹿を見るのか？世俗に生きていれば、そんなことは掃いて捨てるほどあります。さぁーどうします？巻かれるか、流されるか、己が信じる道を進むか、わたしたちの目指すところは・・・。

私達の目指すところ

 アメリカに住んでいますといつもサンクスギビングあたりから日の経つ早さを実感します。ついこの間、クリスマスをお祝いしていた私達ですがあっという間に新年もお祝いし、今やまた日常に戻りました。年末年始にはその時期に語るべき礼拝メッセージをお話してまいりましたが、再び伝道の書に立ち返っていきたく願っております。

私達にとってそのはたらきが正等に評価されて報われるということはとても嬉しいことです。コツコツと日々まじめに生き、委ねられていることを成し、諸悪から遠ざかり生きている人には正当な報いがあり、反対に人の目を盗んでは手をぬき、なすべきことをせず、悪事によって不正をなしているものには、それに相応しい処罰があるということは、とても分かりやすく納得できることです。

伝道の書を記しましたソロモンがその世界を眺めた時に、彼が見た世界は自ら納得できるようなものではありませんでした。

14地の上に空な事が行われている。すなわち、義人であって、悪人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。また、悪人であって、義人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。わたしは言った、これもまた空であると。伝道の書８章１４節 

わたしたちの世界において、正直に生きている者達はいつも健康であり、経済も安定しているというのなら、これはとても分かりやすいし、私たちは納得します。そのことにより、それなら自分も正直に生きようと思うのです。

しかし、そういうことばかりではないということをソロモンはこの世界のあちこちに見つけたのです。そして、私達も同じことを感じることがあります。なんであんなにいい人が、正直な人がこんな目に遭うのだろうか、こんなことになるのだろうかということを私たちは見聞きすることがあるのです。反対に何であのような悪事をしている人が罰を受けずに栄えているというようなことがあるのです。ソロモンはこのようにも書いています。

10またわたしは悪人の葬られるのを見た。彼らはいつも聖所に出入りし、それを行ったその町でほめられた。これもまた空である。

11悪しきわざに対する判決がすみやかに行われないために、人の子らの心はもっぱら悪を行うことに傾いている。（伝道の書８章１０節、１１節）

表向きは聖所に入るけれども、陰では何をしているのか分からない。そのことが咎められることがないばかりか、それが町でほめられている。否、町の人もその悪に気がついているのかもしれない、しかし、それを口に出さない。このように悪しきわざに対する判決がすみやかになされないために、人々はどうしたらばれずに悪をすればいいのか、どうしたら楽して良きものを得ることができるのだろうかということばかりに心が向いている。

このようなことは私達の回りで日常的に見られることです。私たち家族は時々、某サラダバーのある食べ放題のレストランに行きます。あのようなレストランに行きますと、必ず飲み物のオーダーがとられますが、私たちは大抵、「水でけっこう」と答えます。そうしますと透明のコップをくれます。ジュースをオーダーした人には青っぽいコップが与えられます。そのコップで水を好きなだけ飲むのです。ジュースを頼んだ人はジュースを好きなだけ自分でファウンティンから飲むのです。

そこで、時々、私たちは首をかしげてしまうのですが、水用のコップにジュースを堂々と入れている人を見かけることがあるのです。それがコーラであったり、パンチであったりで、一目でそれが水ではないということが分かるのです。しかも、それが子供を連れた親であったりするのです。観察していると店員さんも、どこか見て見ぬふりをしているように感じます。きっと彼らは咎められることもなく、得した気分になって家路につくのでしょう。

そんなものをいつも見ていますと、水をオーダーして水ばかり飲んでいるのが馬鹿らしく思えてきて（当然のことをしているのですが）、いつか水のコップでジュースを飲み始める人がいるのかもしれません。そして、このようなことは水やジュースにとどまらなくなるのです。「水」や「ジュース」を身近なところにある私達の心を魅了するものに置き換えてみましょう。この類の問題で世界は悲鳴をあげているのです。はたして私たちの世界は「ばれない者勝ち」なのでしょうか。

ある方がアメリカの裁判における陪審員を皮肉って「陪審員とはよい弁護士を選ぶ人達」と言いましたが、あながち全てを否定できないように思えます。この国で一般的に「よい弁護士」とは「報酬が高い弁護士」を意味しますから、本来、起きた出来事の公正を明らかにする裁判も、時にその当人達がどれだけのお金を持っているかによって決定されてしまうことがあるということを否定できないのです。私達の周りにこのような不公平は山ほどあります。

ですから公義が全うされない、正当な評価というものがなされない現実に直面し、自分の仕事や個人的な生活の中で悩んでいる人、苦しんでいる人は皆さんの中にもけっこういるのではないでしょうか。そして、この新しい一年もこのような状況に置かれるということがきっと私達には少なからずあることでしょう。もしかしたら、その現実に心を奪われてしまって自分のエネルギーをそのようなことばかりに使うような日々を送ってしまうかもしれません。時に怒りに満ち、とんでもないことをしでかしてしまうかもしれません。そこで私達は新年早々に御言葉によって、この大切、かつ極めて現実的なことに対して予め光を照らしておきましょう。この一年の間、これから開く御言葉が私達を守ってくれることを心より願います。

そこで今日、示されている聖書の箇所は詩篇３７篇です。この３７篇はソロモンが空しいと嘆いたこの世界の現実について、そのソロモンの父親であったダビデが記したものです。息子も世の不正、不義をつぶさに見、嘆いたように父ダビデも自らその不義の中でどう生きるかを模索し、そこで光を見いだした人でした。長い箇所ですので、今朝の礼拝で全てを見ることができませんが、この３７篇はほぼ全て、これまでお話してまいりましたように、不義が見過ごしにされているような世界にあって、私達はどう生きたらいいのかということを記しています。

詩篇３７篇１節‐４０節

1悪をなす者のゆえに、心を悩ますな。不義を行う者のゆえに、ねたみを起すな。2彼らはやがて草のように衰え、青菜のようにしおれるからである。

3主に信頼して善を行え。そうすればあなたはこの国に住んで、安きを得る。4主によって喜びをなせ。主はあなたの心の願いをかなえられる。

5あなたの道を主にゆだねよ。主に信頼せよ、主はそれをなしとげ、6あなたの義を光のように明らかにし、あなたの正しいことを真昼のように明らかにされる。

7主の前にもだし、耐え忍びて主を待ち望め。おのが道を歩んで栄える者のゆえに、悪いはかりごとを遂げる人のゆえに、心を悩ますな。8怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てよ。心を悩ますな、これはただ悪を行うに至るのみだ。

9悪を行う者は断ち滅ぼされ、主を待ち望む者は国を継ぐからである。10悪しき者はただしばらくで、うせ去る。あなたは彼の所をつぶさに尋ねても彼はいない。

11しかし柔和な者は国を継ぎ、豊かな繁栄をたのしむことができる。

この３７篇を書き記したダビデは今から３０００年前に生きた人です。彼の時代は今以上に不公平や不義というものがなされていたと想像できます。まさしく、今日のようにしっかりとした法もないような時代、まさしく納得のいかないような不正が日常、いたるところにあったことでしょう。

しかし、ダビデはそのような現実のただなかで、力強く言うのです「悪をなす者のゆえに、心を悩ますな。ねたみを起こすな。彼らは放っておいても衰え、しおれる。そうでなくて、主によって喜べ、その道を主に委ねなさい。主に信頼しなさい。怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てなさい。怒ってしまったらあなたも彼らと同じ悪に陥る。神様は必ず義を光のように明らかにするから。その正しさを真昼のように明らかにするから耐え忍びて主を待ち望みなさい」

昨年、箴言４章２３節から「油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉はこれから流れ出るからである」という言葉を礼拝の中でお話しました。まさしく、私達の周りにある様々な不義・不正はダイレクトに私達の心に入ってきます。しかし、それらが私達にどんな感情を引き起こさせるのか、そこに至るまで、それら自体はまだ私達の心を支配していません。ですから、私達はそれらを見聞きするにつけ、そのことを主への信頼と喜びによって押し返すのです。

そして、先週の元旦礼拝でお話しましたように、自分が成すべきことを精一杯にし続けるのです。信仰に生きるということは不正や間違ったことに口を閉ざすということではありませんから、しかるべきことには声をあげるべきでしょう。しかし、そのことだけに己が心を支配されてしまうことがないように、主に委ねるべきことは委ね、主が既にはたらいてくださっているということに信頼を置きましょう。あのガラテヤ人への手紙をおぼえましょう「まちがってはいけない。神は侮られるようなかたではない。人は自分のまいたものを刈り取ることになる」（ガラテヤ６章７節）。

それでは私達はこれらのことを踏まえてどこに私達の目を向けて日々を暮らせばいいのでしょうか。それはこの詩篇３７篇全体を見ていく時に明らかにされます。３節、９節、１１節、２２節、２７節、２９節、３４節を注意深く見てみましょう。

3主に信頼して善を行え。そうすればあなたはこの国に住んで、安きを得る。

9悪を行う者は断ち滅ぼされ、主を待ち望む者は国を継ぐからである。

11しかし柔和な者は国を継ぎ、豊かな繁栄をたのしむことができる。

22主に祝福された者は国を継ぎ、主にのろわれた者は断ち滅ぼされる。

27悪をさけて、善を行え。そうすれば、あなたはとこしえに住むことができる。

29正しい者は国を継ぎ、とこしえにその中に住むことができる。

34主を待ち望め、その道を守れ。そうすれば、主はあなたを上げて、国を継がせられる。あなたは悪しき者の断ち滅ぼされるのを見るであろう。

ダビデは心のうちに葛藤があったのでしょう。まさしく、その不正、不公平に怒りを感じたこともあったでしょう。義憤に燃えたこともあるでしょう。しかし、ある時、神様によって気がつかされたのです。あなたはこの世の不正に対して一喜一憂するために生きているのではない。あなたがそのことに気がついているように、私の前にもそれら全ては明らかになっており、私は全てを知り尽くしている。それらについて私は放っておかない。だから、あなたは私の領分に踏み込んで思い悩むよりも、あなたがまずなすべきことに集中しなさい。そうだ、あなたが本来、なすべきこと、目指すべきことは「国を継ぐ」ことなのだ。

国を継ぐということはどういうことでしょうか。二つあります。一つは文字通り、私達が生きているこの世界を継ぐということです。最初に「伝道の書」についてお話した時に、この書には「日の下」という言葉が何度も出てくると申し上げました。そして、ソロモンは、私達が生きているこの日の下、すなわち太陽の下は諸々の空しさで満ちているのだといいました。しかし、その空しさで満ちた日の下で私達は国を継ぐために、この地に生かされているのだということです。

私達は人間が歩んできたその道のりというものを歴史として眺めることができます。人の歴史はそれに幕が下ろされてしまうのではないかという危機感を抱かせるような諸々の諸悪と、また同時に数多くの人間の善意と良心のせめぎあいを続けて今日にいたっています。そして、そのような中でこの人間世界が今日あるのは、悪に屈せずに良心をもって生きてきた無名の人達のその歩みによるのです。彼らこそが今日から明日にこの世界をつなげてきた者たちなのです。

そのようなことは「ほら、ここにもその証拠がある」とか「あそこにもそんな人がいる」というように明らかにされるようなことではありません。しかしながら、確かに今日の世界が保たれ、次の時代へと世界が継がれてきたのはこのような人達の存在があるからなのです。それこそが私達が神様から託されている私達の目指すところです。

そして、同時にこの国を継ぐということは神の国を継ぐということをも意味しています。エペソ１章１３節から１４節にも記されているとおりです。

13あなたがたもまた、キリストにあって、真理の言葉、すなわち、あなたがたの救の福音を聞き、また、彼を信じた結果、約束された聖霊の証印をおされたのである。

14この聖霊は、わたしたちが神の国をつぐことの保証であって、やがて神につける者が全くあがなわれ、神の栄光をほめたたえるに至るためである。

私達はこの地上の国を継ぐものであると同時に神の国の世継ぎなのです。その保証として私達は聖霊の証印をおされているのです。いや、そんなこと初めて聞いたという方もいるかもしれませんが、実に私達にはこのような驚くべきことが託されているのです。私達はこの地に生きながら、この地を継ぐために、また神の国を継ぐために生かされているのです。この崇高な使命を忘れて目の前で起きている事に心奪われて、取り乱すことがないように、私達はしかとこのことを自覚して日々、胸をはって生きようではありませんか。

来週はこの合衆国にとって偉大な一人の人間の誕生日を迎えます。マーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師です。あらためて彼の説教を聴きました。キング牧師の説教といえば、あの有名な「私には夢がある」というあの説教です。しかし、同時にこの度、私の心をとらえた説教は、師が１９６８年４月３日、すなわち暗殺される前の晩にメンフィスで話した「I’ve Been to the Mountain Top」という説教でした。その説教は翌日にどんなことが起きるのかをあたかも師は知っていたかのようにこのような言葉で終っています。

私は今、何が起きようとしているか知りません。分かることはこれから先にも困難が待ち受けているということです。しかし今やそれは私にとって大きな問題ではありません。なぜなら私は山の頂きに登ってきたのですから。私は心配しません。もちろん私も他の人達のように、長く生きたいと思います。でも今やそのことも心配していません。ただ私は神様の御心に従いたいのです。神様は私に山の頂に登ることを許してくださいました。そして、そこから私はあたりを見回したのです。そして、そこから約束の地を見ました。そこに私は皆さんと共に入ることはできないかもしれません。しかし、今晩、皆さんにぜひとも知っていただきたいことは、やがて私達がその約束の地に入るということです。だから私は今晩、さいわいです。私は何事をも心配しません。私はどんな人間をも恐れません。私の目は主がこられるその栄光を見ているのですから。

キング牧師が貫いた信念は劣悪な人種差別に対して非暴力で応えるということでした。すなわち悪に対して善で応えるということです。それは弱々しいものではなく、揺るぎない強い力を内に秘めた運動でした。まさしく、それは詩篇３７篇に記されているように悪をさけて善を行うことによって成し遂げられた勝利でした。

今日、私達は誰しもがこのキング牧師はこの合衆国が二分してしまうような危機を救い、この「国を継いだ」最も偉大な人の一人であったということを知っています。しかし、それだけではありません、そのキング牧師は地上最後の晩、「もう一つの国」を見ていました。いいえ、見ていましたというより、キング師の言葉によれば主ご自身が彼を山の頂に連れていき、そのところで彼に約束してくださっているもう一つの御国、約束の地、すなわち神の国を彼に示し、その国をも彼は継ぐのだということを知らせたのです。実にキング牧師の生涯は見事にこの二つの国を意識し、この地上では寄留者のようにして、自らなすべき使命に没頭し、その生涯を全うしたのです。

皆さん、この一年、私達は様々なことを見聞きすることでしょう。まさしく、ちらちらと目の前に起きている不正、正直者が馬鹿を見る、それが人事ではなく、まさしく自分に降りかかって来るというようなことも経験するかもしれません。その時に今日、開かれました聖書の言葉を思い起こしましょう。

主はわれらと共におられます。私達は自らが何をすべきかを知っています。やがて全てのことは明らかにされることでしょう。私達は現在、この地を継ぐために、そしてやがて神の国を継ぐために今を生きているのです。それこそが本来、私達が目指すところなのです。

最後に詩篇一篇を読んでこのメッセージを終えましょう。

1悪しき者のはかりごとに歩まず、罪びとの道に立たず、あざける者の座にすわらぬ人はさいわいである。2このような人は主のおきてをよろこび、昼も夜もそのおきてを思う。

3このような人は流れのほとりに植えられた木の時が来ると実を結び、その葉もしぼまないように、そのなすところは皆栄える。4悪しき者はそうでない、風の吹き去るもみがらのようだ。

5それゆえ、悪しき者はさばきに耐えない。罪びとは正しい者のつどいに立つことができない。6主は正しい者の道を知られる。しかし、悪しき者の道は滅びる。

Living in USA, I feel the days fly by so fast from Thanksgiving Day onward. We have just celebrated Christmas, and welcomed the New Year’s Day, and we are back to normal. I have prepared special messages for the end of the year and the New Year Day, I would like to go back to studying the Ecclesiastes.

 

When our works are appreciated fairly, we are very happy. We can all understand if those who work each day diligently, carry out their part, and live away from evil deeds are rewarded properly, and those who cut corners, neglect to do their share, and live cunning life are punished accordingly.

 

But, the world Solomon, the author of Ecclesiastes, observed was not like that. He did not like what he saw.

 

¹⁴And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!　(Ecclesiastes 8:14)

 

If righteous people are always healthy, and financially stable, we can accept that as fair. And we feel we should live an honest life also.

 

But Solomon had seen things in this world which did not sit well with him. And we also feel that way from time to time. We see and hear situations when we wonder why such good people, and honest people, should encounter so much difficult life? On the other hand, some known crooks are left prosperous without being punished. Solomon wrote:

 

¹⁰I have seen wicked people buried with honor. How strange that they were the very ones who frequented the Temple and are praised in the very city where they committed their crimes! ¹¹When a crime is not punished, people feel it is safe to do wrong. (Ecclesiastes 8:10-11)

 

These people are permitted to enter the holy temple. But, we do not know what they are doing in secret. They are getting away with their evil deeds and people seem to praise them. Perhaps people are aware of their cunning behavior but no one brings out in the public. Since such wicked acts go unpunished, people are more concerned about finding ways to get rich and acquire good life by cheating and stealing in secret. People try just to get away with it.

 

We can see this around us in daily life. Our family eat at an all-you-can-eat salad bar sometimes. They always ask us what we would like to drink. We almost always say “Water is fine.” Then, we are given a transparent cup. Those who order soft drinks get a bluish cup. We can drink as much water as we want with the transparent cup. Those with a bluish cup can drink juice or soft drink from the soda fountain as much as they want.

 

But, some of the time we see people going to the soda fountain with a transparent cup and pour in juice into the cup. People can immediately tell that they are pouring cola or punch, but not water. Sometimes parents with children do that openly. Although store clerks seem to know what is happening, they pretend not to know. These customers not caught in the act might go home feeling victorious.

 

When people see this happening too many times, people might feel foolish drinking only water in the transparent cup and might be tempted to drink juice in it. This is not limited to water and soft drinks. We can easily replace “water” and “soft drink” with other things that we crave for. The world is overrun by such acts. Has this world come to consider cheating as a legitimate way of living?

 

Some commenting on juries in American justice system said: “Jurors are there to select a good lawyer.” There is some truth in it. In this country, a good lawyer means a well-paid lawyer. So, our justice system which is supposed to seek out the truth often ends up handing out a favorable decision to those who can pay more money. This type of injustice is all around us.

 

I am sure that some of you have faced the reality where fair acts are not appreciated and justice is not carried out. For that reason many of you might agonized over it. We might end up facing the same thing repeated in this new year. Some of us might be too preoccupied with such reality and get exhausted jut by watching such unpleasant daily occurrence. We might get so angry and act out our anger. At this beginning of this new year, let us consider this important but pragmatic reality. The words of the Bible we study will give us guidance in our life throughout this year.

 

Today’s scripture reading comes from Psalm 37. This was written by David about the reality of the world which Solomon, his son, said was full of emptiness. His son, Solomon, saw injustice. Father David also had to face the reality and pondered about it, and found light in the darkness. This Psalm 37 is rather long and we cannot cover the entire chapter. But, this tells us how we should cope with and live in this world which seems to overlook injustice around us.

 

Psalm 37:1-4

¹ Don’t worry about the wicked. Don’t envy those who do wrong. ² For like grass, they soon fade away. Like springtime flowers, they soon wither. ³ Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. ⁴Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. ⁵ Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. ⁶ He will make your innocence as clear as the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. ⁷ Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. ⁸ Stop your anger! Turn from your rage! Do not envy others—it only leads to harm. ⁹ For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land. ¹⁰ In a little while, the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone.  ¹¹ Those who are gentle and lowly will possess the land; they will live in prosperous security.

 

The author of this Psalm 37, David, lived about 3000 years ago. We can easily imagine that more unfair and unjust things were done in those days. They did not have established laws. There must have been unimaginable injustice committed all the time, everywhere.

 

But, David says: “Don’t worry about the wicked. Don’t envy them. They soon fade away. Take delight in the Lord. Commit everything to the Lord. Stop your anger. Turn from your rage. Don’t become like them. God will reveal his righteousness like a noon light. Wait patiently for Him to act.”

 

Last year, we learned words “²³Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. “  from Proverbs 4:23. All kind of unfair and unjust things around us hit our heart directly. But, how they impact our feeling is up to us. We must know how to deal with such reality. When we encounter such injustice, we can push them back through our trust and joy in Lord.

 

As we learned last week, we must continue to do what we should and can do diligently.

Life of faith does not mean we should maintain our silence as we face such injustice. We must speak up against it when appropriate. Things around us should not be allowed to take over our heart. We should leave what belongs to God to Him. We must trust that Lord will take his action. Remember the words from Galatians:

⁷Don’t be misled. Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow! (Galatians 6:7)

 

Then, how are we supposed to live our daily life? We can find guidance for that in this Psalm 37. Let’s look at verses 3, 9, 11, 22, 27, 29, and 34.

 

³ Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.

⁹ For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land.

¹¹ Those who are gentle and lowly will possess the land; they will live in prosperous security.

²² Those blessed by the LORD will inherit the land, but those cursed by him will die.

²⁷ Turn from evil and do good, and you will live in the land forever.

²⁹ The godly will inherit the land and will live there forever.

³⁴ Don’t be impatient for the LORD to act! Travel steadily along his path. He will honor you, giving you the land. You will see the wicked destroyed.

 

David must have felt uneasy in his heart. He must have felt angry over unfair and unjust things in the world. He must have been burning with just anger. But, God reminded him.

God reminded him that he should not be moved by every injustice of the world. God said that everything was very clear like an open book. God knew every injustice. God said that God would not ignore what is happening around us. So, David was not supposed to worry about these things. David was to concentrate on what David could do. What David was supposed to do, and attend to, was to inherit the land.

 

What does it mean to inherit the land? There are two meanings. One is to inherit this world we live in. When we talked about the words from the Ecclesiastes, we learned that the expression “under the sun” was repeated many times. Solomon said that under this sun where we live, the world is filled with emptiness. But, we must remember that we have been sent to live in this world under the sun. We must inherit this world.

 

Our human history tells us the nature of the journey we have taken to this day. Our human history is filled on one hand with evil occurrences which threaten our own existence, and on other hand it is filled with goodness and goodwill of the people. Our human world still exists today because of many nameless people who lived with good heart even in the face of injustice. These are people who have carried this world on their shoulders over the years.

 

Perhaps their deeds and presence are not too obvious. You might not find their names in the history book. But it is very true that these people have inherited this world, and have kept the world intact all these years.  And that is what we are called upon by God to do.

 

To inherit this land means also that we inherit the kingdom of God.

It is said in Ephesians Chapter 1 verses 13 to 14:

 

¹³And now you also have heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. ¹⁴The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us everything he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God. (Ephesians 1:13-14)        

 

We are to inherit not only the land on this earth but also the kingdom of God. We have been identified by the Holy Spirit as such. Perhaps some of you have not heard about it before. But, we are charged to take on this amazing task. We live on this earth to inherit this land, and at the same time to inherit the kingdom of God. We should not lose sight of this supreme mission. We should not be moved by daily occurrence around us. We must be aware of our mission and live accordingly.

 

Next week, we celebrate a birthday of one of the greatest men of this USA, namely, Rev. Martin Ruther King. I went back and listened to his speeches one more time. The most famous one was that “I have a dream” speech. But another speech he delivered in Memphis on the night before he was assassinated caught my heart. This is called “I’ve been to the mountain top.” This speech ends with words which seem to say that he knew what was to happen to him the following day.

 

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.

And I don't mind.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place.

But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will.

And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over.

And I've seen the Promised Land.

I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!

And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man!

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!

 

The philosophy Rev. King lived with was to fight back racial discrimination with non-violence. He countered evil minds with good heart. It was not manifestation of weakness. But, it came from unyielding power within. This was what Psalm 37 said also. We must not yield to evil but rather should stick to doing what is right.

 

We know today that this Rev. King was the greatest individual who has saved this nation from danger of breaking up over racial issues and that he did indeed inherit this land. And on the eve of end of his life, he had seen another land. Or rather than just seeing it, according to Rev. King, the good Lord himself took him to the mountain top and showed the land he was promised to inherit, the Promised Land. Indeed, Rev. King lived his life being aware of these two lands, and lived his life as a traveler concentrating on performing his assigned mission until the very end of his life.

 

We are going to encounter many things this year. We might see injustice. We might see the honest being taken advantage of. It might happen on us directly. At those times, let us remember today’s scripture.

 

Lord is with us now. We know what our missions are. Everything will be brought to open someday. We live our life on this land to inherit not only this land but eventually to inherit the kingdom of God. And that is our mission here on earth.

 

Let us conclude today’s message by reading Psalm 1.

 

¹ Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with scoffers. ²  But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants; day and night they think about his law. ³ They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper. ⁴ But this is not true of the wicked. They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. ⁵ They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. ⁶ For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.

２）詩篇３７篇１節から４０節を読んでみましょう。ここには悪をなす者、不義を行う者に対してどのような姿勢であるべきかと書かれていますか。あなたはここに記されているようなことで悩んだり、ねたみを感じたり、憤りを感じたことがありますか？

 

 

３）上記のような感情に支配されてしまう時に、私達は８節にありますように「ただ悪を行うに至るのみ」となります。このような私達に対して箴言４章２３節に記されています「油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉はこれから流れ出るからである」という言葉はどんな教訓を私達に与えてくれますか。

 

 

４）たとえこの世界において諸々の不正を垣間見る私達に対して「まちがってはいけない。神は侮られるようなかたではない。人は自分のまいたものを刈り取ることになる」（ガラテヤ６章７節）という言葉はどんな意味をもちますか。

 

 

５）詩篇３７篇３節、９節、１１節、２２節、２７節、２９節、３４節にはどんな共通点がありますか。「国を継ぐ」ということはどんな意味があるのでしょうか。私達の人生の目標をこのことに定める時にどんなことが私達の心の中で起きますか？

 

 

６）最後に詩篇一篇を読み、主の前に歩むことができるように祈りましょう。
